Craig, there's no hard and fast rules on this. There are a couple things to keep in mind, though, as you "voice" opinions on SM. First, you never really know what the response is going to be. One can lose credibility with some by voicing an opinion that is either not well founded or contrary to their own. Second, once it's out there, it's out there. SM posts have a long life. You might go in and delete it, but there's a good chance that post was already sent to a third party app like TweetDeck or an RSS aggregator that captured it.

Rule of thumb, don't say anything that you would be ashamed to shout from a busy street corner.

This sounds like if there's going to be any kind of definition that it should be left up to the states. For example, Local in Vermont, encompassing ALL of vermont is far less square milage then California, Florida, Alaska or Texas stating that a product is locally grown. Purely distance based could get confusing as to how to market items only within a 30 mile radius of the farm as being "local" but that's why there are regional, local, and national distribution systems I guess.

I think that those not participating in the "food fast" trend are unaware of the business they are missing because their consumers don't know. The demographics of people who eat at a Hardees vs. a Panera are probably vastly different. As such, I would think "food fast" options would actually drive more new business then increase business within your current customer base (opinion / guess of course).

For example, I wouldn't go to Arby's until a few years ago that they added their "market fresh" line. As a result, I go there and get "food fast" options at what was traditionally a fast food establishment. Locally I see this with Webster's Cafe. They opened a 2nd location which served more then just coffee. This has taken me there several more times then a local coffee shop normally would (and kept me there longer to spend more money :) ).

I think it would be a great idea to incorporate barcode labels in to more everyday life. Having seen that the iphone has app's that you can download to scan and compare prices of food online, as well as an app that tells you the content of the food. Great start, just hope they keep developing the idea!

I definitely wouldn't take into account the cost of seeds in creation of food, probably because you go to the store and buy a packet of seeds for 50 cents or something. I'm curious as to the effects that Terminator seeds have on the market costs. Shocking that I wouldn't expect government intervention in this area to help prices unless it were to outlaw the creation of terminator products.

I personally think Toyota has mismanaged the situation. They under-estimated the size and impact of the problem. Then they responded too slowly.

I think part of this is the cultural differences between countries. I'm not sure that people in Japan expect an apology. Traditionally, they expect more. Also, Japanese are known to be very thoughtful about decision-making. Perhaps they were simply slow because they were trying to analyze the situation to get the best answer.

I think the lesson from an agricultural entrepreneurship point of view is that decision-making in a crisis must be different than normal decision-making and that if we have customers from different cultures, we must meet the expectations of their cultures, not ours.

Linkedin, myspace, facebook, and all places like them are good places to get buzz generated about a business. Having a website with an easy to read domain (like http://www.perdue.com/) can also help search engines find you.

You need a "foot in the door" all over the internet because you never know when one or two random people will connect you to a whole new group of customers who would never have known about you or your company.
